Impersonal Dwelling of The Spirit

There is a great rule of biblical interpretation which states: A radical statement will always establish, at the same time as the first statement, an opposite statement.  For example, Paul, referring ti Christ, states the following assertion, “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.” Collossians 2:9.  An opposite statement for this assertion is, “In no other being or person the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.”  Based in this principle of biblical interpretation we can conclude that the Holy Spirit lived in Christ in a truly mystical and real manner, but not in anyone else.  To prove the great truth of this statement let's go to the simplicity and unrevocability of the Word of God.

Moral Reason (Opposite Natures)

The Scriptures teaches us that God does not abide in temples (bodies) built by human hands.  The words “temple”, “house”, “building”, “dwelling”, “tent”, “tabernacle”, etc., are biblical or theological synonyms and many times they connotes human bodies.  For example,

  1. Christ once said, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” John 2:19

  2. "Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven , not built by human hands” 2 Corinthians 5:1

  3. “...as long as I live in the tent of this body, because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me”. 2 Peter 1:13-14.

As you see, there is no doubt at all that these verses, and many others, make of the words “temple”, “tent”, “house”, “ building” biblical synonyms to the word “body”.  Therefore, when the Inspiration declares, “However, the Must High does not live in houses made by men”. Acts 7:48, it clearly states that God (The Lord's Holy Spirit) does not dwell in bodies which are the result of the sexual relationship between a man and a woman, both sinners by nature.

Between God and men there could not exist truly substantial relationship due to the existing and contrasting natures are not compatible natures.  God is purity itself and by contrast men are corruption within flesh by nature.  The prophet Isaiah declared, “Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted.  From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness - only wounds and welts and open sores, ...” Isaiah 1:6.” ...and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags”. Isaiah 64:6.  “...if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks up evil Luke water!” Job 15:15-16.

This is the sad reality of this present evil age that man is in such deep state of corruption that he is unable to submit to God's will.  Moreover, the Scripture clearly establishes that our sinful nature will remain with us without any change until death (1 Corinthians 15:42-44).

Therefore, it is biblical and correct to say that by the reasons already given (not-compatible natures) God (let it be understood, his Holy Spirit) cannot dwell in a personal and mystical form in the believer.  His dwelling is impersonal.

Legal Reasons

The Holy Word teaches us that God created us as individuals or as persons with free will.  According to the book of the origins Adam was made our natural earthly father at God's image in order for him to rule the earth.  This implies that Adam, as well as his descendants will be possessors of that which is called “judicial personality”.  Each man must all appear before the judgment seat of God or of Christ, that each one may be accountable for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

It is evident that we are going to be judged as individual capable of being held accountable of our own acts before the Lord.  The conclusion we intend to obtain is simple: “WE ARE INDIVIDUALS WITH JUDICIAL PERSONALITY” 2 Corinthians 5:10, This implies that we are:

  1. Not more or less that one individual.

  2. More than one means plurality, and less than one means incapacity or incompetence.

In order for an individual to judge in justice he alone must be accountable of his own acts as an individual.  Of it appear evident that those acts were committed by another than it would be impossible to make them accountable of such acts and therefore the case is out of the judgment panorama.

The Holy Spirit is a person and if such dwells inside the believer, who is also a person, the it would mean that there is a dual-personality in the believer and will result in the juridical problem already mentioned, thus, provoking an unfair legal process.

Implication of the Dual_Personality

The Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-5) and therefore has all the divine attributes.  If the Holy Spirit dwells in bodily form inside us, then it is the Holy spirit responsible of all our improper acts.

Remember, dear beloved reader, whenever there is a unity of two personalities acting together it is imperative to make responsible the one who is acting as head or leader.  In the case here exposed, it is evident that the Holy Spirit, not the believer, will be the head due to the fact that with no doubts at all the Spirit is the almighty and dominant participant all the time.  Isn't it true?

After this astounding argument some point out that the Spirit is present in the believer but it does not forces him to do the right thing because the believer remains with his free will.  If this is true, Why does the Holy Spirit places itself inside the believer? Who, as we already proved, by no means can become an appropriate house or temple for the Deity.  This is absolutely absurd!

Some will establish that whenever the believer does the right thing, it does so due to the dwelling of the Holy Spirit, and whenever he sins the Spirit is grieved and leaves him.  But, in contrast to this statement, the Bible teaches us that the Spirit will always be by our side for ever (John 14:16) There is not even a minimal trace of evidence that declares that there is an “in-and-out” of the Spirit in the believer - this has no biblical support at all.  Without any doubt the Holy Spirit does not dwell in bodily form inside the believer.

Evangelical Reasons

The evangelical evidence is now even more extraordinary after analyzing the already-given reasons.  We had already established that by morale and legal reasons the Holy Spirit cannot dwell personally within the believer.

For such reasons, God decided to incarnate to come down and manifest himself to mankind (1 Timothy 3:16).  He did not take a man product of the sexual relationship but he made the miracle of begetting a virgin and his shadow came upon her in order to the Lord Jesus to be born, which was the only body in order for the Deity himself dwell in him “...sacrifice and offering  you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; ...” Hebrews 10:5.   God takes control of a body created by the Holy Spirit in a direct form and in a representative manner dwell among men in order to save them.

This way, the apostle Paul declared, “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.” Colossians 2:9.

The Jewish Tabernacle was a figure of the Christ and his salvific act.  Notice the fact that inside the tabernacle, in specific inside the Ark of the Covenant, was found the law as the written expression of God's Will.

About Christ it is written, “I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart”. Psalm 40:8.  “Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will swell among them” Exodus 25:8.

In reference to Christ's birth the prophet declared, “...and will call him Emmanuel” Isaiah 7:14.   Emmanuel means “God is with us”.  All these similarities between the tabernacle and Christ are evidence that the sanctuary was a figure of Christ and his incarnation; and moreover, it demonstrates that only Christ is the appropriate temple (body) where the fullness of the Deity dwells the way the apostle Paul declared in Colossians 2:9.  There is no doubt at all!  The dwelling of the Spirit is impersonal.

Finally, the question you, my dear beloved reader, should ask is, If the Holy Spirit does not live personally in the believer, then, how does the Spirit dwell in us?

The word dwells by The Word

Jesus said, “...The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life” John 6:63.  The word and the spirit are in absolute harmony- unseparable .  The spirit is the author of the word, “And we have the word of the prophets made more certain...; you must understand that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpration , For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:19-21.  This is the reason why the Word of God is the Spirit's weapon or tool, “...and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:17.

We must see the virtues of the word from two basic aspects:

  1. The word is creative and realizing power due to the fact that they are spoken by the Almighty.  “And God said; Let there be light, and there was light.” Genesis 1:3.

  2. The word is an unrevocable promise, a fulfilled compromise (in Christ), which comes from Justice itself: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Matthew 24:35.  God has clearly demonstrated the word's living and achieving power.  God does not need to bring physical evidence in order to demonstrate this reality.  Some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you.” Jesus answered, “ A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign!  But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” Matthew 12:39.  The declaration by Jesus is clear: You must believe in the confirmed compromise by Christ, which was figured by the prophet Jonah.

We are living the dispensation of faith (2 Corinthians 5:7).  Therefore, it is not necessary to see to believe, but to believe and then see.  This means that we must focus on #2, not #1, so to speak, His word is an unrevocable holy compromise of salvation in Christ, for whoever believes in Him.  To focus on visual signs and miracles is not believing in that wonderful word of compromise therefore making him a liar (1 John 5:10).  Moreover, after such word has already been confirmed through Christ about 2,000 years ago!
